After the storm- Neighbors getting together, window fridge, trees down and cops everywhere!

Last night I rode my bike home after dark.....not so smart! It was pitch black after 31st street which was was really scary event though I was riding really slow. Robert was waiting at the corner for me and he was so worried. Not doing that again. Sunsets today at 5:50 pm and you better believe I'll be home before 5:30 pm.  When I got home I walked up with my bike, Robert and Lola to our neighbors having a cookout in front of our APT. I LOVED IT!! Made me feel so good inside. I love it when people come together. Living in NYC you don't really get to know your apt neighbors so it was really cool to see everyone getting together.
Oh this is how we've been keeping our milk and cheese cold! When we go to bed we put our food out on the fire escape which actually has bee really working!

A tree that fell down on Monday...it's Friday and it's still down.

There are traffic cops up and down the street directing traffic because there are no lights...crazy!

GOOD NEWS we get our electricity back at 11 pm on Saturday...so excited to turn on the lights in my kitchen!

New Yorkers Are Survivors!

Picture your neighborhood in complete darkness, people walking around using flashlights and cop cars patrolling the streets with their lights on.....yep that's what the Lower East Side is like now a days. No power, no cell service and no hot water...some places don't have any water at all.
Our building turned on the hot water last night...YEAH...hot showers and hot water for washing the dishes.

Last night I made dinner by flashlight....ha!

I ended up making a chicken (which I reheated) and cheese quesadilla.

My friend invited me over for a glass of wine and Robert insisted on walking me over.  I'm glad he did because it was scary out on the streets.

I wore my Uggs to my friends..it was cold! Who's from CA!!

The bodega at the corner had a generator going. It was the only lite up thing on the block.
Alls you see are headlights in the night.

One thing I realized through all of this...NEW YORKERS are survivors. They make the best of what is given to them. Ya, it sucks that we don't hav electricity or cell service or hot water...but we're making it work! I love that about the people here. I'm proud to call myself a CA New Yorker!

Hurricane Sandy left us in the dark

Hurricane Sandy hit the tri-state area late night on Monday, Oct. 29th. Robert and I headed out early on Monday to get some things for the house.
On our way out.

The stores were pretty busy.

Rain was coming down...not so hard though. The wind was picking up.

Good ol' Smart Water to the rescue!
I made some chocolate cookies to pass the time.

I decided to work out too!
When everything was said and done there wasn't too much damage. Our roof top door was ripped off its hinges.

And we were left with no electricity, hot water or cell service. Robert walking up our 5 story building.

Through it all though we are good to go! Robert and I have been playing cards by candle light and reading lots of books.
Today, Wednesday, October 31st we rode our bikes up to 63rd/Lex to Equinox to take a hot shower! HA! #Makingitwork.

We hope that all our friends on the east coast are doing good and are safe!

Love- Robert and ML
